How to fix a missing brand in a product feed
A clear approach to brand, seller identity and manufacturer fields without making up product data.

A missing brand should be fixed with the brand under which the product is genuinely sold, not a placeholder or a keyword. For own-label products, that may be the shop's trading brand. Brand and seller name are related but different: one identifies the product brand, while the other identifies the business offering it.
Why this matters now
Brand gaps often affect every product at once because many shop platforms do not make the field mandatory. That makes it tempting to fill the column with whatever is handy. Resist that. A consistent, truthful brand is useful for product identity, while a guessed brand makes the feed less reliable and harder to correct later.
What to check first
| Check | What good looks like | What to do if it is missing |
|---|---|---|
| Brand | The product's marketed brand | Use the real consumer-facing brand |
| Seller name | The business offering the product | Set it at store level where appropriate |
| MPN | A genuine maker part number | Only provide it when supplied by the maker |
A practical way to do it
- Check packaging, manufacturer information and the public product page.
- Use the real brand the customer would recognise for the product.
- Apply a documented own-label default only where it is genuinely correct.
- Keep seller name separate from the brand field.
- Leave manufacturer identifiers out unless they are real and verifiable.
Common mistakes
- Entering a marketplace name as the brand for every third-party product.
- Using 'N/A', 'Generic' or a campaign slogan as a brand.
- Copying a supplier's internal manufacturer code into a brand field.
What this does not mean
A clean product feed makes your catalogue understandable to a receiving platform. It does not guarantee approval, inclusion, ranking, sales or a particular checkout experience. Those decisions and customer-facing flows remain with the platform and the merchant.
The useful habit is simple: correct the source data, then validate the exported feed. Do not patch a one-off file and assume the next shop sync will remember your fix. That is how a tidy launch turns into a slow drift a fortnight later.
See the missing fields in a public shop catalogue before you spend time formatting a feed by hand.

Can my shop name be the brand?
Yes for genuine own-label goods sold under that name; not as a substitute for another maker's brand.
Is seller name enough if brand is missing?
No. Where both are required, each should describe its own real-world role.
