A ChatGPT product feed is a structured copy of a merchant's catalogue for product discovery. It describes each product or variant with stable identifiers, a title, description, public URL, image, brand, seller name, availability and price. It is not a shopping theme, an advert campaign or a promise that a product will be shown.

Why this matters now

Merchants are being asked to make catalogue data more portable, yet a shop export often mixes dependable facts with fields that are empty, stale or only useful to a human. A feed exposes those gaps early. Think of it as a carefully labelled delivery crate: it carries product facts to a receiving channel, while the shop still owns the inventory and fulfilment.

What to check first

CheckWhat good looks likeWhat to do if it is missing
IdentityOne durable item_id per sellable rowReuse the shop's SKU or internal ID if it remains stable
Customer pathPublic product and image URLsFix permissions, redirects and variant-specific links
Commercial factsCurrent price and availabilityReturn to the shop source, then refresh the feed
A practical first-pass checklist. Your shop remains the source of truth for products, prices and stock.

A practical way to do it

  1. Start with the catalogue already powering your public shop, not a spreadsheet copied six months ago.
  2. Keep one row for each sellable product or variant and give it an item_id that survives title edits.
  3. Check that every product URL and image URL opens without logging in.
  4. Add merchant-wide facts such as seller name, policies and default brand where the shop has no field.
  5. Validate again after a stock or price change so the feed and source shop do not part company.

Common mistakes

  • Treating a feed as an approval application. The feed is evidence of product data quality, not a decision from OpenAI.
  • Using collection URLs where a product page is required. A customer and a crawler need the specific item.
  • Replacing stable IDs whenever a product is renamed. This makes an unchanged item look new to the receiving platform.

What this does not mean

A clean product feed makes your catalogue understandable to a receiving platform. It does not guarantee approval, inclusion, ranking, sales or a particular checkout experience. Those decisions and customer-facing flows remain with the platform and the merchant.

The useful habit is simple: correct the source data, then validate the exported feed. Do not patch a one-off file and assume the next shop sync will remember your fix. That is how a tidy launch turns into a slow drift a fortnight later.

See the missing fields in a public shop catalogue before you spend time formatting a feed by hand.

Questions

Is a ChatGPT product feed the same as Instant Checkout?

No. A feed supports product discovery. Checkout is a separate merchant and payment flow.

Can I use my Shopify catalogue?

Shopify data can be a source, but check the current Shopify and OpenAI guidance for the applicable connection and eligibility.
